ABOUT

Welcome to my website! My name is Rebecca Hise, and I am currently studying architecture at Cal. Poly Pomona!

Throughout high school I had thought that I was going to pursue aerospace/aviation in college. I believed this so much so, that I applied for a scholarship that would allow me to become a pilot at age seventeen.

I received the scholarship and went to Mississippi in June of 2023 to complete my training. I loved being in the air, but I eventually realized that aerospace wasn’t something that I was very passionate about; it just didn’t feel right.

While completing my pilot training, one of my peers encouraged me to pick up sketching. I hadn’t drawn in years, but I bought a sketchbook and decided to give it a try.

Mississippi was beautiful, but the only scenery that I could really draw was the structures that surrounded me; and thus, architecture became an option for my future.

I made the decision to switch from aerospace engineering and go to community college to pursue something that felt right. I haven’t looked back.

I can genuinely say that I am so incredibly passionate about architecture and design. This, this feels right. Architecture is connections and creativity made one. It is comfortable and curious at the same time; it is truly something I care about.

Though I am still in the early stages of my journey in architecture, I am beyond excited to continue on this path and grow my love for this field even more.

MY MESSAGE

Being a pilot makes me admire architecture on a deeper level.

Flight integrates structure, materials, and environment.

It navigates 3D space.

It is precise and exact, there are calculations and limits, there are harsh conditions and unusual circumstances.

Aviation also focuses on people; it connects them.

It is such a unique feeling, sitting above the clouds, controlling an aircraft that my flight instructor and I were inside of. Hearing him talk about his own experiences, and flying over the small towns he frequented was such a special sentiment. Not only was it surreal to be thousands of feet in the air, but it was unreal to have a view of everything on the horizon, being trusted to keep us flying, and being capable of returning us home.

Aviation is about responsibility to the human experience. It is a service to the lives of others.

Architecture is the same way.

Architects hold experience in their structures. They determine everyday life. They are responsible for the people who occupy their buildings. Structures must be safe and strong, they must feel comfortable and correct.

Flight and architecture are more connected than people initially realize.

I think that connections such as these are what makes life so meaningful.

Because even if two things seem worlds apart, there is almost always a link between them.

Isn’t that so beautiful?

Now that I am pursuing architecture, I have once again felt that responsibility to the lives of others. This responsibility, the one I felt flying above rural Mississippi and the one I feel staring at the sketches of my designs, is one that is innate. I am honored to have the opportunities to influence the lives of others, and I plan to dedicate my work to the human experience.

I am so excited to continue my studies in architecture, and I hope to return to the realm of aviation someday. However, I know that regardless of whether it is aviation or architecture, I will uphold this responsibility to others with the utmost passion.
